MARCH 2012 "The Black and White Challenge

THE 'BLACK AND WHITE' CHALLENGE

Welcome to the Daily Painters of Pennsylvania Challenge Blog!

One of the best ways to learn about value is to paint

with black and white. By taking color out of the equation, the

ability to see shifts in value in an object (or objects) can

become easier.

The subject matter of your painting is totally up to you, or

you can use the photograph that is shown above.

Create your piece using any medium you want to use, but

you can only use black and white. You can use a premixed

black, or you can create your own chromatic black.

My favorite mixture for chromatic black is ultramarine

blue deep, cadmium red deep and a smidge of viridian green.

(to check that your on the right path when you're

mixing this up, just mix a little bit of white into a little bit

of your mixture)

I bought a bunch of carnations just to bring some
bright color into the house during the dreary winter
months. They lasted for weeks, and gave me ample
opportunity to paint and photograph each of
the different colors in the bunch!

I painted this particular
carnation to celebrate Valentine's Day, so it fit
perfectly with this month's DPP Challenge blog's
focus on 'Celebrations'. Here's hoping that every one
of your days is a reason to celebrate!

February 2012 DPP Challenge 'Celebrations' Hosted by Christine Marx

I am so happy to host this month's Daily Painters of Pennsylvania Challenge. I have been itching to paint some type of dessert. I have attached a photo of something delicious that we had at a restaurant in North Carolina 8 months ago when were seeing my nephew off to be deployed to Afghanistan. I am happy to report he is coming home today!! So in celebration of celebrations and family and desserts (because in my house they all go hand in hand) I'd love to see what the other Daily Painters come up with. It doesn't have to be this dessert - just something that has to do with celebrations!

Cleaning up my studio, I found the "start" of a watercolor that was to be a painting five years ago. I, however, gave up on it and it wasn't until the clean up today I evaluated it: I had put an over-abundance of very bright colors in that underpainting.
Because of the flashes of color that pond fish make in the bright sunlight, I kept most of them and attempted to paint the negative shapes. Here's my submission for this month's Daily Painter's of Pa challenge that I call "Flash Dancers".

With the Winter's chill in the air, I look forward to the ice melting on the goldfish pond; anticipate the greening of leaves and the return of Spring. Ah! the warmth of Springtime is on my mind! Here's the fish in my backyard pond right after they were fed. Merry Christmas, everyone, and a Happy New Year! The challenge this time was simply to find the time to create an entry during December. I finally sat down the afternoon of Christmas Eve and created this little vignette from small wooden houses that my father built and hand-painted years ago. They're sitting on my breakfront; I love to get them out every year and hold something that I know he also held and crafted with his own hands.

Christmas is choirs of angels singing to the newborn King as the star in the East points the way to the manger.
Glory to God in the highest and on Earth, Peace and Goodwill to ALL people.

Traditionally, people are going about their business this night; getting ready for bed...putting presents underneath the tree and setting out cocoa and cookies for Santa. A child looks out the window for the bearded fellow in a red suit. Have we lost the true meaning of Christmas and think only of the gifts we did or didn't manage to get for someone? Let us remember the reason for this season people are getting that last minute "shopping" benefit regardless of their faith.

It is a tiny baby, born in a manger to a virgin a very long time ago and He who lives in our hearts today.

I have been collecting Santas for years, and this little

red and black plaid bean bag santa is not only one of

the first I ever acquired, but it is also one of my favorites.

I am rather fond of that 'poof' ball of a beard!

He's rather small, and each year I like to hide

him Christmas Eve for the kids to find on Christmas Day.

Now my grandchildren search for him!

An icy snowy morning awaits us in the days ahead; but I'm not looking forward to those cold days of Winter. Depending what part of the country you come from, the Wooly worm either predicts a long cold winter (lots of black on it's body) or a mild one (lots of brown). I think I'll just sit by the fire with my honey, my Westies and a nice glass of wine. Cheers!

... that I would not care to repeat. Bad enough the light is changing; every time you look at an ice cube, it's different. A lot different! But here is a quick rendition of a single cube melting in my tea bag tray (which has a country rooster on it, whose feet you can see). Thanks for the crazy challenge!

I thought this is my chance to create another to start a series but time has gotten away from me and I decided to post this one. I was'nt sure if the rules meant you had to create a new piece for the challenge or if it was OK to us an old one.

Whew! The month is nearly over!
I'd been wanting to do this picture, from a photo my husband took a couple of years ago, on our way home from Florida on the Auto Train (what fun!). So, when this challenge came up, I decided to use it here. Then, I got involved in a watercolor pencil class with our own Amy Lindenberger; the timing of this piece was perfect for trying out new techniques.
I enjoyed the underpainting process (top). As Amy pointed out, the curtain is sort of springing from the top of my head. She made suggestions to tone that down, which I tried - it was too late for the best solution, which would have been to alter the composition from the photo. Oh well!
As for the regular colored pencil work, some areas I was fairly pleased with and felt I'd learned something. Others, not so much, but still learned something. I was clearly in over my head with a striped shirt.
I'm looking forward to taking colored pencils with Amy, in November.
The view from the train window, which was the point of the challenge, was a big smear in the photo, so that was hard for me to interpret. Initially, I tried reproducing what I saw in the photo. Yikes! Then I tried to show some elements of the landscape. Yikes.
Anyway, what a great class and what an interesting idea for this month's challenge!

I chose this scene because it is an everyday event from my studio. Lots of backyard wildlife for my cats to watch. Sometimes for hours! This is my girl Sherrie. She keeps me company while I paint. This was a real challenge as I had light from inside and outside bouncing everywhere and a warm orange cast from my blinds so when I painted the inside of the window it just wasn't white anymore.

Last Thanksgiving, my daughter had set up these pears

in the windowsill to greet us. They looked so interesting,

peering outside as if with longing. Of course

my pear obsession button began to beep so I got

lots of pictures so that I could paint it some day...

I got such a smile on my face when I saw Taryn's

challenge for us this month, because this fit the

bill perfectly.

In anticipation of the coming cooler weather, the object of October's challenge is to paint a landscape as seen from the comfort of your studio or home, by looking through a window. Paint any view out a window but include at least part of the room interior, even if just the window frame. Find a scene that appeals to you, remember to keep the distant scene muted to set it back in space, and keep it as simple and loose as you'd like.

Here is my submission for the first DPP Challenge!

The scent of the lilies is the reason I plant them in my

garden - even more than their beauty. I have planted

lilies of many types and colors, but am always

disappointed that they seem to revert back to

their native color. This deep red-orange asian

lily is one of the few that has kept its original color

from year to year. Now if I could just figure

out how to make sure the other lilies would do the same...

While my husband was driving his race car around one of the Summit Point Race way track, I sat and painted this lily. Usually, I'm the one checking the air in his tires, etc.; but he had plenty of extra help this weekend and didn't need my assistance. Good for me! The night before this, I drew the main flower of the lily to be able to paint it at the races.

Sitting under the canopy and with drivers and friends walking in and out to see what I was doing; I painted, conversed, walked the dogs, and returned to paint some more. I used only a black and white photo copy of this painting because I didn't want to limit myself to the actual colors of the original photo; I wanted to use imagination--still using reds in mine.

This painting was done at the Jefferson Circuit of Summit Point Raceway. Therefore, the painting just has to be tited "The Jefferson Lily".
