Daily Painters of Pennsylvania Challenge Painting for June/July 2013 "Abstracts Puzzle Me" by Mary Beth Brath

Abstracts Puzzle Me by Mary Beth Brath
5x7" Holbein Aqua Oils

Ahhh Yes - another wonderful DPP Challenge.  I have created a few abstracts that I have not shown to the public.  When I was about 3/4 of the way through this painting, I realised I have a very cohesive group of work coming together. Flips me out!  It was not forced. It was not planned.  Incredible.  When the body of work is ready to show, I will have an exhibit.

The background on this painting was applied with a brush.  The rest of the paint was thickly dabbed and laid on with a brush much like a little tiny sponge and toothpicks...keep in mind it is only 5x7".

I hope to try another abstract before the challenge ends.

Lavender Blue - Acrylic palette knife floral abstract by Pennsylvania Contemporary Artist Pat Koscienski

"Lavender Blue"
9" x 12"
Acrylic on canvas

This painting was done ala prima using texturized acrylic paint and a palette knife.  It started off as a nonobjective abstract for this month's DPP challenge.  However, I started to see some flowers on a mountain side and decided to stay with that. I did not stop to  photograph different stages for fear of breaking that right brain period that I was in.   If you have any questions or wish to purchase, contact PAT.  If you wish to see more of my paintings, both abstract and representational, please visit my blogspot and website at:

OMBRE STRIPE I BY ARTIST SUE MARRAZZO

I TOOK THE CHALLENGE FOR THE JUNE DPP MEMBER'S CHALLENGE. ABSTRACT ART WAS THE TASK. THIS WAS ONE THAT I KNEW I WOULD ENJOY! I LOVE PAINTING THIS STYLE, BUT I WANTED TO TRY SOMETHING NEW. SO, I RECENTLY NOTICED THE FASHION TREND OF OMBRE COLOR. SO I USED MY NEW FRENCH ACRYLICS, AND WENT TO WORK. I JUST FINISHED THIS PAINTING THIS MORNING AND I WANTED TO SHARE IT ON THIS ART BLOG! THANKS FOR PUSHING ME AS AN ARTIST WITH THESE CHALLENGES...
I LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERYTIME!

"Raw Railroad" by Larry Lerew

"Raw Railroad"
by Larry Lerew
Acrylic on Canvas 8 x 10" en Plein Air
#13-06-03

I was painting in Mechanicsburg and set up to paint the under side of the train car being used for the Chamber of Commerce as their office. The subject was devoid of color and all the metal framework and steel wheels were painted black. I still had shapes and values to see so I worked them into my design and replaced the black shapes with intuitive colors. This painting went a little beyond my recent semi abstract work although you can still make out the wheels sitting on tracks with ties underneath and the rivets running along the car's side on top.  I liked the experience and was pleased with the painting. I enjoy interpreting reality as abstract forms and find myself doing it all the time.

Day One of My Abstract
For the June/July DPP Challenge

This is rather like walking around...in only your underpants...
I am feeling rather vulnerable and exposed!

I have NEVER tried doing an Abstract painting before, so
this is going to be an interesting experience.  I am going to be
brave, and each day that I work on my Abstract painting, I
am going to post the good, the bad and the ugly!

Step One - just brushing color onto my canvas
to remove all of that pristine whiteness!

Step Two is to look at the photograph (to the left
of my canvas), and pull out the abstract shapes that
I want in my painting.

Step Three, Painting on the canvas - with NO photographic
reference.  That has been removed from the studio so that I am
not even tempted to look at it.
I find I am still being too representational - but I see a
small amount of hope here.

What do you think?

I hope you will join me in this challenge.  I would
love to see other's experimentation!
