Welcome to the Daily Painters of Pennsylvania Challenge Blog!

My class asked me to do a demonstration on sky and water reflections.
We did a small creek last week so this week we will take
on a bigger scale. I am posting two images to choose from, or you
can choose your own.  Calm water gets darker as it gets
closer to the viewer. You can see into the depth more.
The reflections of busy water still takes it's color cue from what
is above. Have fun with the brushwork. Exaggerate the colors if you
like, crop and find a composition that speaks to you.

I will post my examples next week.

Good luck, and Happy Painting!

"Nonie and Charlie" by Charlotte Yealey

19x16
Graphite
I love to get back to basics with pencil so I drew this from a over 50 year old photo of my aunt riding our horse "Charlie". This horse pulled my dad's plow before he got a tractor and from what I heard was very gentle. I was too young to remember him.Check out my website at www.charlotteyealey.com

OAK LEAF AND ACORNS
an Original Oil Painting
by Claire Beadon Carnell

'Oak Leaf and Acorns'
Oil
4 x 6

I had taken some great pictures of acorns and dried
acorn leaves thinking they would make good paintings,
so I decided to use one of them for my black and white study.
This was so much fun to work on because there were
a lot of subtle shifts in the value changes, and I loved
the shadows that helped pop out the lighter tones.

If you would like to see more of my work,
please visit my website or my blog. If you are
interested in purchasing any of my paintings you see
here on this blog, please contact me.

March DPP Challenge by Daily Painter of Pennsylvania Mary Beth Brath

I absolutely love this challenge blog.  Thank you Claire for pulling this site together for the group.

At 9am this morning I started the challenge painting. Right in my kitchen. I used a large brush and quickly covered the acrylic paper with mid tone grays and started a very rough abstract painting of the values. Then I picked up a smaller brush and went at the process of breaking down the large value masses.  At 10:15am, I finished and signed my name.

I used a sample set of black and white Chroma Interactive Acrylic Paints that were given to me last summer at the Gettysburg Festival plein air events. Thank You Chroma!!

Doodling with the doggie toys by Linda Young

Doggie Toys
Sketch book pencil drawing

Pencil drawings for me are difficult, so the best I could do for the black and white challenge is a doodle of my two dog's toys which are scattered all over my living room floor!  Near them is a cardboard toy box that is full of chewies, balls and kongs.  Their bed is disheveled with their blanket tossed across it.  Somehow my black slipper always finds it's way down here from our bedroom.  The slipper is Hannah's favorite thing to steal from under the bed and run as fast as she can down the stairs to play with it.  I didn't even miss the slipper until I noticed it when I was drawing.  Kaysi's favorite toy is ALL of them, especially when Hannah tries to play with just one.

My living room is not my own; but is the dog's play pen.

Sketching in the backyard sunshine! by Christine Marx

I spent yesterday sketching in the backyard. This is the little water feature that is right outside my back door. It was so nice sitting in the sun, relaxing, and sketching. I hope you like it.

MARCH 2012
"The Black and White Challenge

THE 'BLACK AND WHITE' CHALLENGE

Welcome to the Daily Painters of Pennsylvania Challenge Blog!

One of the best ways to learn about value is to paint
with black and white. By taking color out of the equation, the
ability to see shifts in value in an object (or objects) can
become easier.

The subject matter of your painting is totally up to you, or
you can use the photograph that is shown above.

Create your piece using any medium you want to use, but
you can only use black and white.  You can use a premixed
black, or you can create your own chromatic black.
My favorite mixture for chromatic black is ultramarine
blue deep, cadmium red deep and a smidge of viridian green.
(to check that your on the right path when you're
mixing this up, just mix a little bit of white into a little bit
of your mixture)

Good luck, and Happy Painting!
