Let The Abstract Paintings Flow Thanks To The Daily Painters Of Pennsylvania Challenge Blog by Mary Beth Brath

For The Love Of Color by Mary Beth Brath
5x5" Acrylic on Canvas Paper

Dream Big by Mary Beth Brath
5x5" Acrylic on Canvas Paper

Brush to canvas. That was the only plan. I know nothing about abstracts. While on vacation at our family cabin in Northwestern PA, I worked everyday on plein air landscapes. Near the end of the week, I stayed up until 2am playing with color...and thinking. As I finished a brush stroke, I would pause and let the next part come to me. The paintings "are what they are". Creative freedom.

Daily Painters of Pennsylvania Challenge Painting for June/July 2013 "Abstracts Puzzle Me" by Mary Beth Brath

Abstracts Puzzle Me by Mary Beth Brath
5x7" Holbein Aqua Oils

Ahhh Yes - another wonderful DPP Challenge.  I have created a few abstracts that I have not shown to the public.  When I was about 3/4 of the way through this painting, I realised I have a very cohesive group of work coming together. Flips me out!  It was not forced. It was not planned.  Incredible.  When the body of work is ready to show, I will have an exhibit.

The background on this painting was applied with a brush.  The rest of the paint was thickly dabbed and laid on with a brush much like a little tiny sponge and toothpicks...keep in mind it is only 5x7".

I hope to try another abstract before the challenge ends.

Extreme Miniature Painting by Daily Painter of Pennsylvania Mary Beth Brath

Pennsylvania Creek - Near Clarion PA by Mary Beth Brath
1" x 1" Extreme Mini in Acrylic

What a great challenge. I used a magnifying glass, trimmed down an old brush, a dental tool and toothpick. I used a 6x6" painting that I did 2 years ago for the subject matter.

December 2012 Challenge Painting by Daily Painter of Pennsylvania Mary Beth Brath

Get it Done!
Self Explanatory by Mary Beth Brath
5x7" Acrylic on Board

"paint with colors you...um...dislike"

Happy New Year To All!!

I hope everyone has set goals for 2013.  Stretch and grow my friends. Reach for the stars. We have some great challenges planned for this blog in the coming year.

There is a thin line between love and hate...so I have been told.  My favorite colors to paint with are alizarin crimson and cadmium red.  I hate pastel and fuchsia pinks.  All other colors are just yummy to me and as an artist, I use them all.

Quilt Art by Daily Painter of Pennsylvania Mary Beth Brath

Quilt Art by Mary Beth Brath
14x11" Acrylic on Board

This was fun. The reference photo did not have a quilt hanging on the wall, but I used my license to meet the challenge for this month.  The photo of the painting did not come out well and this one must be seen in person.

Fungus Among Us by Daily Painter of Pennsylvania Mary Beth Brath

Fungus Among Us
6x12" Acrylic Alla Prima

Well...Claire put out a reminder about this month's challenge and I took the bait. I may decide to touch this up...or leave it alone...not sure yet.

I searched around my yard to paint the mushrooms plein air but could not find any today. So I went way back to photos I took in 2008 while at our family cabin in Northwestern PA.  Thank you Pat for hosting the challenge.  I have always wanted to paint mushrooms and this made me focus on the subject.

March DPP Challenge by Daily Painter of Pennsylvania Mary Beth Brath

I absolutely love this challenge blog.  Thank you Claire for pulling this site together for the group.

At 9am this morning I started the challenge painting. Right in my kitchen. I used a large brush and quickly covered the acrylic paper with mid tone grays and started a very rough abstract painting of the values. Then I picked up a smaller brush and went at the process of breaking down the large value masses.  At 10:15am, I finished and signed my name.

I used a sample set of black and white Chroma Interactive Acrylic Paints that were given to me last summer at the Gettysburg Festival plein air events. Thank You Chroma!!
